We've recently fixed a few bugs related to how we track when structures that have been replaced during a split is freed (WT-4037 for example). It would be nice to have some documentation describing how split generation tracking is expected to work.

We have quite a number of long comments in our code, my preference would be for this documentation to give an overview, and links to the comments in the code.
