 Description

This has come up in the Storage team's retrospective as a thing which we think could aid in improving the diagnosability of the server.

Obviously this is just a stub and you'll have to collect more requirements from key stakeholders like alexander.gorrod first.

Closing this issue in JIRA. It's been moved to the new, unified feedback engine at https://feedback.mongodb.com/forums/924283-compass.

We are looking for input to decide how to prioritize it, so go there, look for the suggestion, vote and leave comments. If you don't find it, feel free to create a new one.

Discussed this with durran.jordan just now.

As a prerequisite there would have to be a way to fetch the data from the DB without requiring filesystem access to the host the server is running on. That's tracked by PM-734.

Thomas, I think that for now you should consider this a feature request for the Compass team. Definitely understood about running this through the normal scheduling process - I just figured this was a good first step to start that process

Understood about the idea of trying this at Skunkworks, although I don't think we should count on that.

alexander.gorrod and ian.whalen, is this a feature request for the Compass team, i.e. please build this for us? In that case, we'd have to schedule it and go through the product team. Given the current roadmap and limited resources I doubt it would be addressed this calendar year.

Or did you mean you'll build it but need help from us, i,.e. "how to build a plugin for Compass"? Perhaps a project for upcoming Skunkworks end of October? We are planning to hold a "how to build Compass plugins" workshop in Sydney just before Skunkworks similar to the US Engineering offsite, but happy to provide details/docs/tutorials sooner.

I think it would be great if users can get some visibility into FTDC via Compass. My context for extracting information from FTDC is via t2, which is very useful, but not aimed at making the data easily digestible.

I'd be inclined to start with something akin to the views feature of T2 for compass, i.e: present groups of statistics, where each group gives a particular view on the database server. Perhaps one view would be I/O utilization, another might be showing common bottlenecks.

Another function that would be very useful would be to show FTDC from a variety of nodes in a sharded environment.
