I am pretty confident this is not a Compass-specific issue but likely a VPN or DNS misconfiguration.

 Description

Receiving DNS related querySrv ENOTFOUND error when attempting to connect with Compass using SRV over VPN to Atlas cluster using GCP. Can connect using list of nodes on VPN. Can ping to each node under VPN. nslookup works.

Can connect using SRV without VPN.

I would not classify this as a Compass bug, especially if with works without VPN but not with VPN.

Things I would check:

  • Does the computer use the same DNS servers when connected or not connected through VPN?
  • Does the VPN server being used support SRV records?
  • Is this a GCP-only problem or does this apply also to clusters with other cloud providers?

Are they encountering this issue in the shell as well?  At first glance, we suspect this may be a configuration error on the user's side.
