Fixed by CSHARP-427.

CSHARP-427 is a bit more general than this. It also allows you to disable MD5 verification on upload or download (in order to reduce CPU consumption at the client).

Pushing to a future release. We want all drivers to do the same thing.

Some do filemd5 upload, and some don't. I don't know of any which have an option, but I haven't looked hard. I've added a similar issue to java – the other one I know which does this. linked to SERVER-3746

Yes, server support is good, but this issue is affecting people who are not on the latest releases and we should never require that if there is an easy fix in the drivers.

Do other drivers allow this? If not, should JIRAs be created for them also?

If the server is going to support running the filemd5 against sharded chunks soon, would it be better to just wait for the server fix? I couldn't find the core server JIRA that says that the filemd5 command will be changed to work against sharded chunks.
