Many Atlas users using the VPC peering feature are a bit confused on which hostnames they need to use to configure their client applications. They should always use the *.mongodb.net hostnames as shown in the "Connect" window in Atlas. Please document in the Atlas docs (maybe in the FAQ) that:

rob.justice I would adjust "AWS VPC resolves hostnames in an Atlas cluster to their internal IP addresses when you enable DNS hostnames. However, you can use these DNS entries to connect to hosts in your Atlas cluster from the peered VPC since AWS automatically handles resolving the peered hostnames." to simply "AWS VPC resolves hostnames in an Atlas cluster to their internal IP addresses when you enable DNS hostnames. You can use these DNS entries to connect to hosts in your Atlas cluster from the peered VPC since AWS automatically handles resolving the peered hostnames." |

Hi rob.justice it seems worth mentioning somewhere (perhaps on the peering docs) that one of the cool things about peering is that this same DNS record can be used even to connect over the private subnets (e.g. when peered) and that all of that is automatic without needing a special hostname. I agree that we don't want to confuse the use here and want to keep it simple, but some folks are wondering "how can I use that dns entry if I'm trying to connect over the private subnet when peered" and the good news is "it is handled automatically, e.g. magic, so don't worry and go on with your day". Not sure where the best place to put this informational box would be but it doesn't hurt to have |
