 Description

Tag ranges can be added on a collection via sh.addTagRange(). After adding, when the associated collection or db is dropped the tag range entry (in config.tags) is not removed (which is by design).
Please update our sharding documentation to mention that database or collection drop will not remove tag range configuration.

okay, we do remove the shard docs, so its tags are removed, if you completely drain and remove the shard. Sorry for the confusion. We just need to doc the DB/Collection behavior.

I think I lied. Let me check if we actually remove the shard doc, or just mark it removed. If we remove it then shard tags are removed with the shard.

Neither the tags collection, nor the shards collection, are touched when you do normal cluster operations (dropDB/Collection nor remove shard). The only helpers/operations which affect them are the ones from the shell helpers and manual editing.

If you add a new collection with the same name, the old tags apply? What about new shards with the same name as old shards?

Should get in there that shard tags are not removed either, when a shard is removed. Probably someplace else, but related to the we don't cleanup on removal.
