 Description

The 3.6 docs report both

https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/core/document/#field-names:

The field names cannot contain the dot (.) character.

and

https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/reference/limits/#Restrictions-on-Field-Names

Field names can contain dots (i.e. .) and dollar signs (i.e. $).

The former should be the same as the latter, including the latter's additional explanation:

Although valid, avoid using . or $ in field names since querying on such fields is not yet functional. See SERVER-30575 for more information.
