Description

Users sometimes need to manually copy the dbpath (in its entirety) between systems running different architectures/OSes. While this usually works, we should document the situations/conditions where doing so is considered acceptable.

ravind.kumar The work that is relevant to this issue actually got split out into a separate ticket: SERVER-38623. Sorry about the confusion on that ticket.

Any fix for SERVER-38623 will need to be accompanied by a plan for updating any affected indexes. I think we would also need to get a handle on that plan before making a decision about backports.

Regardless of policy, at minimum a short-term fixup here is to document that as of now, MongoDB does support cross-arch data file portability with a few notable exceptions (as noted above).

If we decide that we want full support for cross-arch portability, then once the fix is in (and backported as necessary, we can document when the exception cases are resolved. If there are other exception cases, we can try to get those dealt with as well. I would venture a HELP ticket might be necessary to capture discussion on the subject? Not really sure where the best place is to have that discussion. cc geert.bosch milkie for guidance.

justin.seyster am I right in thinking this issue should go back a few versions? And what is the likelyhood that SERVER-37183 gets backported?
