 Description

Description

Downstream Change Summary

We are removing the default dbpath for macOS:

  • strongly encourage the desired behaviour (use a packaged install) via docs
  • also inform users about the option of creating and specifying a dbpath via docs (eg using a path in their home directory)

Description of Linked Ticket

macOS Catalina runs in a dedicated, read-only system volume. Consequently, the default dbpath of "/data/db" is not writeable. This issue is discussed in more detail in https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58283257/mongodb-cant-find-data-directory-after-upgrading-to-mac-os-10-15-catalina

Since this default will not work on Catalina and later, we should remove the default dbPath for macOS.

Correct.

milkie Understood. You're referring to the `~/Desktop/Relocated Items` directory? No problem, I'l put together a tutorial, but awaiting upstream ticket for specifics (log message changes / default behavior changes if any).

Note that the original SERVER ticket and description were changed since this docs ticket was created.
I suggest putting some special documentation for the behavior described in here:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58283257/mongodb-cant-find-data-directory-after-upgrading-to-mac-os-10-15-catalina
specifically what happens when users upgrade to Catalina – that their /data/db directory is actually moved as part of the upgrade.
