 Description

The current recommended procedure to resync a replica set member is detailed in https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/tutorial/resync-replica-set-member/

However step 4 in particular is confusing:

Start the mongod process, specifying Replication Options with a new members[n]._id.

It's unclear from the text how that step should be done. It was less confusing in the 4.4 version of the manual. I'm guessing that the change in recommendation was due to SERVER-47852 and SERVER-47363

So I have a couple of questions:

  1. Should step 4 be changed to e.g. "remove the old member using rs.reconfig() and re-add the member to the replica set as a new node" to make it clearer & easier to follow?
  2. Should there be a note stating that just removing the dbpath without removing and re-adding the node could lead to undesirable results?

Note: this ticket was created due to the community discussion in https://www.mongodb.com/community/forums/t/new-member-id-for-resync-replica/118034/3
