 Description

We have a lot of CS tickets / consulting engagements that end in needing to adjust (usually turn down) disk readahead.

We should have some documentation around the affects of disk read-ahead, how to view and change it, and when it's a good idea to do so.

We should also have a page "Why isn't mongo using all available RAM?" that links to this page.

I'll go ahead and close this since we do have the line in prod notes about readahead settings. Of course, the prod notes are currently undergoing review and updates, so feel free to comment on the code reviews as they happen.

This is related.
The problem is not which readahead value is the best, but give customers a good and easy way to set it.

Not sure where we are with this but the documentation on disk readahead should include the method for persisting settings described at:
http://docs.mongodb.org/ecosystem/platforms/amazon-ec2/

and also the udevadm approach addressed in this linked ticket to improve that same page.

Are you looking for support with this issue or suggesting a change to the documentation?

On monitoring a big migration (900Gb) in Mongo with changing READAHEAD of the database-devices
at 06:00am to 0 and after 14:20(02:20pm) back to 1024 we see no impacts only a big growing of "page faults"
