http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/reference/limits/#Sharding-Existing-Collection-Data-Size In limits we have a strange table which discusses possible value of shard key 1003 - the limit for shard key size is 512 so we should not be using an invalid shard key size in this example table. |

Sorry for taking so long, the max split points for a 512 byte shard key is: 31588. And that would give you 31 GB for 1 MB chunkSize, and 1.93 TB for 64 MB chunkSize. The doc page didn't explain this, but I think it is important to mention that the estimate limits are for the worst case - the case where the document contains nothing but the shard key values. It is also a odd that we allow ~1k shard key values to exist as long as they were created before the collection was sharded. |

Let me re run the test with 512 byte shard key. |
