 Description
  • MMS will pre-split chunks and distributed them evenly across shards before any data is inserted.
  • The balancer should be off. The user is responsible for this. Having the balancer on will prevent Grooms from running. It will also result in potentially unnecessary chunk moves.
  • Inevitably the balancer may need to be turned on from time to time if new shards are added or shards become unbalanced (unlikely, but possible). This is okay, as long as it's noted that Grooms sourced from this blockstore will not be able to run during this time.

We have decided to not offer sharded blockstores in on-prem 1.8 and let them bake a bit more in cloud. Ops manager 1.8 will come with it disabled by default (MMSP-7090). We can use this ticket to track all requirements and recommendations for a sharded blockstore for 2.0.
