 Description

Currently if you check the server docs, it does not mention at all that Cloud Manager / Ops Manager are capable of doing log rotation and that they will be doing log rotation automatically for instances deployed by Automation.

It is likely that users attempt to setup custom log rotation, while it's already managed by MMS (note that because of SERVER-16821 this may endanger stability of the deployment).

We should mention in the server docs (https://docs.mongodb.org/manual/tutorial/rotate-log-files/) the capabilities of Cloud Manager / Ops Manager in regards to log rotation.

We should also make this feature more visible in the Cloud Manager's / Ops Manger's documentation.

We should also make this feature more visible in the Cloud Manager's / Ops Manger's documentation.

Indeed, I searched for approximately two hours yesterday for the ability to configure the automation agent's handling of mongod server logs. There is a tutorial, but it is tucked away under "Alerts and Monitoring: Logs". I only found the documentation today because I had the exact path through the UI to enter in google. Discoverability of this information is hindered by the fact that the automation agent manages four types of logs: its own, monitoring agent, backup agent and mongod server.

https://docs.opsmanager.mongodb.com/current/tutorial/view-logs/#mongodb-on-disk-logs

The automation configuration documentation page is relatively easy to discover, especially if one knows the mongod setting in question. However, there are only sporadic links back to the Ops Manager documentation that configures those settings. It would be nice to have a link to the "On Disk Logs" documentation above for the following settings.

Also, would it be possible to link to that documentation above from the other descriptions of logs managed or manageable by the automation agent?

In the case of the later two, a simple note indicating the settings are best managed via automation and the Ops Manager UI with a link to the documentation page above.
