http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/core/document/#structure should clarify which structure a top-level (and not-top-level) fieldname can have. For example, can it be an integer, or does it need to be a string. |

All field names (keys) are strings as defined by BSON. Might be worth noting that here: You cannot have a null character in a field name either, which is also not mentioned in the above doc. |
