 Description

Add clarifications to the following:

https://docs.opsmanager.mongodb.com/current/reference/cluster-configuration/#mongodb-instances
https://docs.cloudmanager.mongodb.com/reference/cluster-configuration/#mongodb-instances

Per Cailin and Tim

  • Q: If I have processes.logRotate.sizeThresholdMB=10MB and processes.logRotate.timeThresholdHrs=24 and the log file reaches 10 MB after 6 hours, do we rotate the log immediately?
    A: Yes. Immediately
  • Q: Suppose then in the next 18 hours, the new log file gets to 5MB. Do we rotate again now - because 24 hours has passed since the process started up ? Or do we wait an additional 6 hours (24 hours since the log file was last rotated)
    A: Wait additional 6 hours
  • Q: Finally, the retention of the gzipped logs is controlled by processes.logRotate.percentOfDiskspace, correct?
    A: Correct

Opened a jira ticket DOCS-8587 to update the on-disk logs section.

This looks good. My only concern is that this is buried deep in the Automation Configuration section.

It would be great if we could also more prominently describe the log rotation process elsewhere, or at least link to this for the specifics. It looks like right now we minimally describe this in the MongoDB On-Disk Logs -> Configure Log Rotation section.
