MongoDB 3.0 does not include Ubuntu 16.04 as a supported platform, only Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 are supported. You can view the supported platform table for v3.0 here: Supported Platforms MongoDB 3.0 . MongoDB 3.2 added support for Ubuntu 16.04 – the instructions for installation on 16.04 do use systemd.
