 Description

MongoDB 3.4 introduced a handshake protocol to collect client metadata information at the time a driver establishes a connection. There is a written specification (SPEC-579) and the feature is supported the 3.4 compatibility releases for our official drivers (DRIVERS-304).

This feature doesn't appear to be mention in the 3.4 release notes or elsewhere in the documentation. The new "appname" URI parameter is also not mentioned in the connection string reference, although we likely shouldn't do that unless there is a full documentation page explaining the feature to cross-reference.

Since this was originally reported, the "appName" option was added to https://www.mongodb.com/docs/manual/reference/connection-string/.

I assume that's sufficient as no separate page was created to discuss the connection handshake.

kanchana.sekhar This popped up in triage, but it looks like we merged a PR. Can we close this out or is there still work to be done here?
