Motivation

Although MongoDB allows users to choose the right tradeoff between performance and consistency, the nuances of the system are complex and are often misused, or surprising to users. We should provide more intuitive and stronger consistency default settings out of the box.

Secondly, MongoDB has battled with the customer perception that it is not reliable, durable, or intentionally chooses unsafe defaults to appear faster in benchmarks.

This will allow MongoDB to push back strongly on the incorrect customer perceptions, reducing barriers and challenges for the sales team with new prospective customers and growing more usage from existing customers.
