| Steps To Reproduce: | Install mongo 2.4.9 on CentOS. Watch and relish the non-relinquishing service call, that prevents boot if you've modified chkconfig to turn mongod on! |

Hi john.barry@pervasive-health.com, Can you check your log file? It sounds like normal journal file preallocation, which can take several minutes. The log should be under /var/log/mongo/mongod.log and if it is preallocation will show messages like:
