The documentation for journaling and preallocation is here - http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/core/journaling/

Hi john.barry@pervasive-health.com,

Can you check your log file? It sounds like normal journal file preallocation, which can take several minutes.

The log should be under /var/log/mongo/mongod.log and if it is preallocation will show messages like:

Wed Mar 12 10:26:23.756 [initandlisten] preallocating a journal file /var/lib/mongo/journal/prealloc.0

If that's not the case, can you add the contents of your log file as a comment in this jira ticket and I can try to help troubleshoot?

Thanks,
Ernie
