 Description

db.collection.find().sort({pubdate: 1})

doesn't warn at all that no documents had that attribute (allowing the user to figure out that they might have misspelled "pubDate").

Any chance to implement this warning?

Since the server has no concept of a schema, I don't think this feature makes a lot of sense. How would the server distinguish between user typos and a query which returns documents which happen to not contain the desired sort field?
