  1. set "pidfilepath = /var/run/mongodb/mongod.pid" in mongod.conf
  2. run "service mongod stop" from shell

Good catch!

This is fixed in version 2.7.1 by this commit - https://github.com/mongodb/mongo/commit/5368b375128302c1bb32ec7c5e6d5b7e6c5cd38b which is a fix for SERVER-13595.
