In nearly all SQL implementations you can create indexes with a limitation on the length of the originating content that is indexed. For example: CREATE INDEX part_of_name ON customer (name(10)); This would allow for several benefits:

Feel free to change the name of this to be more in-line with industry standards. I believe prefixing or prefixes to indexes might better convey the idea. |
