 Description

In nearly all SQL implementations you can create indexes with a limitation on the length of the originating content that is indexed. For example:

CREATE INDEX part_of_name ON customer (name(10));
– creates an index using the first 10 characters of the name column

This would allow for several benefits:

  • more configurable and useful indexes
  • less memory and/or disk space requirements for indexes
  • higher performance indexing
  • higher performance sorting

Feel free to change the name of this to be more in-line with industry standards. I believe prefixing or prefixes to indexes might better convey the idea.
