Sahil, the logs can show remove operations if the log level is 2 or higher, but if it was not set that way you won't be able to see when and how those documents were removed.

You may want to check your data for corruption using validate(). If you find data corruption, you may want to check the health of your disks. If your disks are fine and your database files are not corrupted, your best way forward is to restore data from backups and increase the log level as described in the link above to see if an application bug is deleting documents when it shouldn't.

If you don't have backups of your data to restore from, you may want to try examining the database files with a binary editor and see what can be recovered – but only if you didn't insert new documents that may have overwritten the previous ones. See the BSON spec for more information on the format used to store documents on disk.

Note that the SERVER project is for reporting bugs or feature suggestions for the MongoDB server and tools. For MongoDB-related support discussion please post on the mongodb-user group or Stack Overflow with the mongodb tag, where your question will reach a larger audience. A question like this involving more discussion would be best posted on the mongodb-user group.

Regards,
Ramón.
