 Description

The --install option fails silently if it isn't run in a shell as administrator. It should probably give some error message about insufficient permissions, because otherwise the user has no idea why the --install did not result in a service in the Service Manager

After a careful backlog refinement, the team decided to close this ticket because of its low priority and limited resource capacity. If you believe that this ticket requires additional attention from the team and should be re-opened, feel free to change the status to "Needs Scheduling" and ping me or @alexander.neben

Sounds good!

Just spoke to mark.benvenuto and he pointed me to the message in the log files which read:

2015-11-03T09:07:08.557-0800 I CONTROL Error connecting to the Service Control Manager: Access is denied. (5)

Though helpful, it could be more clear and specify that it needs to be "Run As Administrator". Additionally, I had not thought to check the log (though curiously I had just been instructed by previous error messages that I needed a log file to use --install) so perhaps take this suggestion with a grain of salt.

Administrator privileges are required to install mongod as a service, please see the documentation here and here, so this is definitely not a bug.

While it may be a useful enhancement request, I'm not sure if it's worth the effort as one would expect elevated user permissions to install anything at the system level on any operating system.
