It could be very useful if each mongod tracked the type and number of database commands run on each node, both since the last restart and since the beginning of time.

We do track them in serverStatus, which in addition to FTDC should give you a pretty good history.

Yes, but we could keep these counts in memory and only batch-write them to disk every N seconds or when the system is less busy.

Wouldn't "beginning of time" require that the database do an extra write for each and every database command, even those that do no writes themselves?
