Thanks Greg. Now it is working. I have downloaded the latest 1.8.1 (32 bit)
build from mongodb.org and i have also upgraded my OS to Ubuntu 10.10
(Maverick Meercat). Previously I was using Ubuntu 10.04 (i.e. Lucid Lynx).
But in Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) it is working smoothly.

Thanks for your help Greg.

Are you still having this issue? If so, can you attach the logs from the mongod process and the shell interaction so we can see what is going on. Something may be preventing the index from being created.

This is in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32 bit. Yes it is with latest 1.8.1 (32 bit).
I tried geospatial indexing in my windows7 64 bit environment. It is working fine even in 1.4.4 shell.

also, is the mongod the same version as the mongos?

is this the latest 1.8.1 build off the website? I can't reproduce the failures using this version or 1.8.2 on ubuntu 64-bit...
