specifically if the input and output directories are the same. main example:

mongorestore --dbpath dump

would mean "read from dump and write from dump" which doesn't make much sense (nothing terrible would happen probably, but better to explain to user)

understand it works but is confusing. i mean who would validly label their db directory "dump"?

That would be valid.
mongorestore converts .bson files to mongod files, so this is a reasonable use case.
