Well I missed this question, sorry for the delay. No locks are required; it's a read of an atomic variable. The value can be stale.

This will be exposed as part of the storage engine API in SERVER-33292, I am not sure what locks are required. daniel.gottlieb?

Also, I'm curious as to how WiredTiger exposes this information, and what locks (if any) are required.

judah.schvimer, would it make sense for "replSetGetStatus" to return this information?
