I can confirm that starting with this commit I was able to build mongo-2.x on Gentoo using system libs. I hope we'll have a tag on this soon so we can push it to users on portage.

it looks like it going to be in: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389169 but I'm not sure about that.
