An option like numParallelCollections may or may not help. Mongodump is also not necessarily the best backup method for large quantities of data, and hardware will play a role as well. That said, the SERVER project is for bugs and feature suggestions for the MongoDB server. For assistance troubleshooting this matter, I encourage you to ask our community by posting on the mongodb-user group or on Stack Overflow with the mongodb tag.
