It appears that threads causing server crashes may not be present in core dumps. Verify if this is indeed true and fix it. |

So, it's turns out that this problem is actually the result of some of the gdb work done by the buildscripts/hang_analyzer.py . It turns out that what we do to hung processes on s390x with gdb is not actually ok, and causes processes to crash. |
