This function wastes several seconds of rebuild time to save a trivial amount of memory. We should just either hard disable it, or monkey-patch it out. |

I've filed an upstream GH issue (linked above), but we should just do something locally to get this behavior sooner so we don't need to wait for them to fix it. |
