 Description

Check Windows Server 2012 and Windows Consumer 8 for successful compilation and unit tests. Production release by Microsoft probably 4Q 2012, beta is available now.

Windows 8 has added some APIs that could be useful for us, including PrefetchVirtualMemory() http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh780543?ppud=4

Initial ticket to see if MongoDB can compile and run on Windows Server 2012 RC.
Succesful.

The setup to test was a Windows Server 2012 RC VM on Azure. Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate
Python 2.7
scons.

Both VS 2010 and scons build work. Also the following tests were run.

scons --release --64 --win2008plus --distmod=2008plus smoke

c:\Python27\python.exe buildscripts\smoke.py js. All 603 tests succeed

I have run mongo-perf against Windows 8 Release Preview (32-bit) on a 2005-era IBM ThinkPad T43p with 2 GB RAM, trying both 2.0.7-rc1 and 2.2 master and it works. Comparing performance of 2.0.7-rc1 between Windows 8 and Windows XP, perf is close, slightly slower on most tests on Windows 8, but faster on one of them. db.hostInfo() correctly says "Windows 8".

Also some cool socket enhancements:
