On page https://docs.mongodb.com/v3.4/reference/operator/query-bitwise/index.html there should be a note similar to the one on $size page - that one says:

"Queries cannot use indexes for the $size portion of a query, although the other portions of a query can use indexes if applicable."

This one should say the same thing for bitwise portion of a query.
