Description
Sridhar, this is about a customer who's having a very hard time
installing the MMS Agent on Windows Server 2003. I think it's mainly
because the docs aren't very good.
In retrospect the fundamental problem for CS-2102 and CS-2142 was
not a problem with their Python installation; the fundamental
problem was that Windows Server 2003 doesn't have PowerShell
installed, and when they went to install PowerShell they somehow
installed an ancient version 1.0 that doesn't work. Once we'd got them
to install 2.0, they started up the Agent ok, but now they're not
connecting to 10gen. Marc has responded to them.
Proposed doc fixes to
https://mms.10gen.com/help/install.html#installing-mms-on-windows :
*) Figure out whether we recommend 32-bit or 64-bit Python on Windows
*) Add the link to download Python 2.7.2 for Windows:
http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.7.2/
*) Depending on whether they should install 32- or 64-bit, tell them
to download python-2.7.2.msi or python-2.7.2.amd64.msi
) Tell them what versions of Windows *don't have PowerShell
installed, or don't have a PowerShell version late enough to run the
MMS Agent installer, and tell them how to install the PowerShell on
various versions of Windows so they can run the MMS Agent installer.
See Tad's note at the bottom of CS-2142, that's a starting point.
*) After installing the agent, we need more thorough verification and
troubleshooting instructions. At the bottom of the "installing on
windows" section we should link them to the next step, which should be
"basic troubleshooting". The "Updating the MMS Agent" section is the
least important and should move to the bottom. I think the customer in
CS-2142 thought they'd set up MMS correctly, but in fact they
haven't, so we need better instructions to verify that their agent is
connected to 10gen.
*) We need a transition at the bottom of the "Installing MMS on
Windows" section, telling them what they've accomplished and what to
do next. I believe they have accomplished running the MMS Agent now,
and at startup, and what they need to do next verify it works, then go
back to mms.10gen.com to complete configuration. Right now, there's a
weird aside about updating the agent, then the next section tells you
to click a "+" on a page. The Windows administrator, at this point, is
still looking at a terminal window, and ought to be told more
explicitly that he should switch to his web browser and visit
mms.10gen.com.
