summary - 

If a linked document is a different partition value, or a partition value is changed after initial sync, it will be synced to the SDK as a dangling link (which will appear as null). The server-side (Atlas) will NOT clean up this `ref` link and it is up the developer/operator to clean up ref's to nowhere
