Description

Earlier versions of the Query Plans page (most recently in 4.0) included a very useful query planner diagram.  The diagram showed the general path through the planner logic from the time the query arrived to the time that results were returned.  That visual representation was an important foundation for the mental model used when thinking about the query planning process.

We should re-introduce this diagram (updating it as needed to reflect the changes to the plan cache algorithm that were in the 4.2 release).
