The Windows installation documentation says to use the --service option to mongod when installing the Windows Service manually (http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/tutorial/install-mongodb-on-windows/#create-the-mongodb-service), but this option is undocumented and only makes mongod exit after seemingly trying to start the 'MongoDB' Windows service.
