Regarding the --authenticationDatabase option, the docs have this to say:
If you do not specify an authentication database, mongotop assumes that the database specified as the argument to --authenticationDatabase holds the user’s credentials.
I suspect this confusing statement is a symptom of the tools it is trying to document, which appear to be the source of the problem: TOOLS-400.
It would be good to get the documentation fixed up in the interim.
--authenticationDatabase is basically required for these two tools when auth is enabled. I have not found a way to avoid using it, though would be worth consulting the maintainers of these tools.
