See SERVER-17447 for additional context, but during 3.0 development the built in version of tcmalloc was customized to achieve some important performance gains. The documentation should be updated to reflect that building with --use-system-tcmalloc will produce binaries lacking this functionality, since these changes are not present in the system version of tcmalloc.
