    Description

"if a database has a 1 terabyte data set, and there are 4 shards, then each shard might hold only 256GB of data"

Two problems: The first is a minor matter of typography. Measurements should be expressed with a space between the number and the unit (with a exceptions such as the degree symbol), thus "256 GB".

The other is more serious. Clearly, you are using GB in its powers-of-two sense, which is unfortunate. It would be preferable to use the ISO/IEC IEC 80000-13:2008 prefixes, like this:

"if a database has a 1 tebibyte data set, and there are 4 shards, then each shard might hold only 256 GiB of data"
