If for some reason people choose not to stick with a sharded cluster (or made a mistake of some sort, after adding the first shard but before adding more, then it is as simple as pointing their clients back to the replica set. The sharding infrastructure can then be torn down and removed.
We should probably include a page to discuss this, and how removing shards works (till you get back to one, so you can remove the sharding infrastructure).
