currently we only support mongodb extended JSON format. It might be useful to support alternative formats such as the shell JSON format.

I think we can keep this contained to serialization only, as deserialization would be a whole other can of worms.

This can probably be done with a visitor style callback vtable similar to bson_visitor_t.
