The characteristics of ByteBuf implementations vary:

      • ByteBufNIO - uses an atomic integer
      • PooledByteBufNIO - extends ByteBufNIO and is the same
      • NettyByteBuf - uses the proxied implementation reference counting
      • CompositeByteBuf - takes no responsibility for the underlying byteBufs when retaining / releasing

The implementation and characteristic should align across implementations.
