It would be good if Ruby driver can optionally fail fast on connection errors and not try to reconnect infinitely, or, at least limit reconnect numbers before issuing an exception. I wrote a Nagios check for our MongoDB replica set, but it takes quite long time until driver realizes the connection is dead.
