Customers have indicated that it would be helpful if the driver had an option to enable escaping / unescaping of unsupported characters in documents keys so that arbitrary data can be stored in MongoDB without having to perform sanitization.

This is a common problem for applications receiving data from data sources that cannot be controlled.
