We recently discovered that SERVER-98461 can have unintended side effects on write operations for which no shard key is specified.
It is likely the reason for BF-36773.
We reverted SERVER-98461 in master today, but as the original PR for SERVER-98461 was merged into master before v8.1 was branched, we need to revert SERVER-98461 also in v8.1.
