For deterministic testing purposes, we could add another sampling mode or query knob that always reads from a specified collection. This means we could pre-populate a collection with a sample at the start of the test (e.g. by using a $sample pipeline), then enable this mode to continue using the sample throughout the test, somewhere in this file.
