As recently observed in the investigation for SERVER-111871 (internal analysis: link), between BSON serialization and serialization for the sorter, there can be quite a bit of overhead per key in the index build, potentially causing more memory to be used for the index build than absolutely necessary. If possible, we should find ways to decrease this overhead.
